G400 MAX has SGRAM. AFAIK only G200 and G400 cards have SGRAM but not 
all of them, some have SDRAM.

With kenel >= 2.4.22 you can check the memory type with the matrox_pins
utility. That is if the information in the card's BIOS is correct. If that
fails the only way to make sure is to look at the memory chips.

Anyways, it would appear that the corruption must be caused by something
else...

The only time I managed to get my card totally messed up was with
corrupted shared memory. I probably had some apps linked to incompatible
DirectFB versions. After recompiling everything DirectFB related things
returned to normal. But in a case like that the corruption should happen
when the app is started not when it's terminated.
