Unless it's what Kenneth suspects (accidental --init all the time), I'd check the mtime on those photos. If they're under some management software, that thing might repeatedly write things into their metadata (JPEG contains so much metainformation that MP3 looks sad by comparison) or similar things. Maybe Ubuntu ships with something that behaves as weirdly as iPhoto on the Macs...
