Hey,
AFAIK, xMach is dead :-( So does anyone know how far Hurd is with
respect to
usability?
well, being one of those Mach fans... I have two ways (apart darwin... I
still hope/don't believe in that DRM...))
1. MkLinux
2. Hurd
the first may look unusual but if it works on your hardware, it is
rock-stable, decently performing... the main requisite is essentially an
old powermac. Theoretically it should almost work on x86 but there is no
release and support for newer macs is quirky. There is a lot of
potential.
Hurd on the other hand well.. (apart the transition to L4 menace... I
still hope Mach can be revived/improved). Hurd is in a strange state. It
is in much better shape than it is thought, but it has quirks. If you
are unlucky you filesystem dies like on my box and you lose everything
(ok. I'm unfortunate, a small Hurd bug was amplified by ext2 fsck being
buggy and segfaulting when trying to repair my FS..). It too tends to be
more happy with older hardware. It is x86 only. Also GNU is not unix by
definition, so porting stuff to it may be more difficult than to say
MkLinux. For example our beloved gnustep is NOT working out of the box
(and I didn't manage to get it to work with some hacks neither). ANyway,
I'll need to reinstall my hurd system.
Have fun!
Cheers,
R
