Mostly, I agree.  The TLD is meaningless.  It just opens up a larger
namespace.  However, I can't think of any reason why, if you registed
vortex.cc, you'd want to register vortex.ws.  Once again, if someone doesn't
know the exact domain URL, then they're not going to just start picking
TLD's out of thin air.  There are already dozens of viable TLD's; soon
hundreds.

That wasn't my point.  It's not about typing in a known address.  It's the
idea that one TLD vs. another makes your web site easier to find or makes
the URL more memorable.  Users won't say "This is television oriented
business, maybe since I didn't find their site at vortex.com, I might find
it at vortex.tv".  Then, "Well, that didn't work, maybe it's at vortex.cc or
maybe vortex.ws or maybe...".  Like you say, it's printed on a business card
or mentioned in an ad.
