I tried to find another registrar who does it this way, and was not
able to.

I don't see this as an issue.  If OpenSRS wants to provide a global
whois for domain names, like the Geektools service, then it can do
that, but it should be separate from the whois server which is
intended to be the authoritative source of data from that registrar.
