That's what I figured.

That can't be right though can it?  De-activated domains should be released back
into the system as has previously been the case, so that they can be
re-registered through_any_registrar. e.g. OpenSRS.

NSI are effectively, it seems, if this is the case, failing to release
de-activated domains, and forcing people to pay their extortionate prices if
they want that particular available domain.

I am waiting for several domains, which I know have not been paid for from up to
a year ago, to be released by NSI, so I can register them with the registrar of
my choice.

OpenSRS should investigate this practice - it impacts all registrars.
