I guess the idea they have is to try and make new.net some sort of
standard so that when the new TLDs come into effect they'll have a lot of
ground on everyone else.

The problem here is when new TLDs are introduced it's very likely that the
new.net 'TLDs' will become invalid (unless you're using a new.net DNS
server of course, in which case you're not seeing what everyone else
sees). 

Sorta like .god and .moo, except they're making it public, charging for
it, and calling it a production service.  They should probably register
.balls...
