They changed to this booty hunting policy about a YEAR ago ;-)
(or at least a very long time ago, maybe not exactly a year ...)

The invoice lists two renewal years (which is against their own 
renewal policy published on their site) and the online payment site 
shows two years as a default in the dropdown (which makes it easy to 
accidentally submit for two years) but you *can* choose a different 
period. When they first changed to it they had two different payment 
sites. The old one they always had for "scheduled" renewals gave you 
only that two year period, no other choice, indeed. I sent them 
hundreds of automated complaints about this practice back then. And a 
second site for "unscheduled" renewals where you could make your 
choice but which had the disadvantage that you had to type in a lot 
of information which wasn't necessary at the first site.
After a while they put a redirect from no. 1 to no. 2, probably 
because of too many complaints, so that they now have only one 
payment site.
