unless the domain is something very very specific to the client
such as 
JohnThompsonConsulting.Com
I would discourage the client from gambling to wait till domain
expires.
Most generic domains that are expiring get targeted by domain
speculators who if they succeed in re-registering the domain
then place search engine affiliate pages on those domains, or the
domain would be targeted by a speculator who will aim to re-sell
the domain to the original owner for bit more than $35

Unless your client does not care if he looses the domain, I wholeheartedly
recommend that you guide him to renew at NSI (home page, click
payments-top right hand corner- then choose renew - then dial one
year only) and then transfer to you.
