In many states, you cannot do that legally. e.g., if $employee has 
some intellecutal property wrapped up in his head, you still have to 
pay him. If $employee has got physical material that belongs to the 
company, you still have to pay him. There are many states where the 
legal position "ah, that's nice. Pay him, and then take him to court 
if you want $something, because he's earned that pay and there's 
nothing you can do to change that."
