We do expired domain monitoring and have number of domains in our Q with
expiration dates in 1999

I have corresponded with chief compliance officer at ICANN on this issue and
do not see any speedy resolution
heading our way.

Similar to the issue of transfers - , NSI would throw up smoke sceens
regarding expired domain, to delay their loss of market share - instead of
focusing on improving their customer service.

We are also feeding the class action lawsuit on NSI hoarding expired domains
http://www.eyeondomain.com/expired_domain_nsi_application.html
with additional evidence, trying to help the issue along.

My subjective opinion after a year of pounding on all kinds of doors on both
transfer and expiring domain issues with NSI:

NSI has enough revenues from their marketshare to pay the best attorneys to
delay any issue in our legal system for substantial periods of time. ICANN
has not yet enforced anything: I was quite hopefull that based on ICANN
forum feedback http://forum.icann.org/regxfer/ there would be a definite
resolution to the transfer issue, but so far no cigar.

The more pressure we collectively place on NSI and ICANN, employing any
possible venues: media, courts, internet,... the better - but we are in for
a long haul - so with expectations adjusted to this level, let's support any
type of effort that pressures NSI into playing fair !

cheers
Genie
