Go to http://www.crsnic.net and do a lookup on the domain. The results will tell you who the registrar actually is.
If it's *not* Network Solutions, tell 'em to pound sand. Otherwise, it's probably best to pay them, wait 46 days, then re-transfer. (The 46 days is to get past the 45 day waiting period during which the transfer would proceed, but you'd lose the year you just paid for).
