A simply timing test on our sites results in 2 to 3 seconds for a lookup
to return a taken or not taken result.

I didn't know there were so many people running windows boxes as Internet
servers.  All of our servers (since 1995) have been Unix boxes and based
on various surveys, most servers on the Internet are Unix boxes...  :)
