I was instrumental in closing dropped name experiment, and would like to
assure you:

1. No expired names were transferred, or used from the moment that end of
the project was announced. No one was able to access any of these names,
except for automated jobs.
2. All expired names are deleted after they hit specific day - except for
list of specifically protected names.

In this moment we maintain list of protected names that relates to one of
previous registry blunders (they took away one year from registration term
of specific names). Domain "gamma-rays.com" that you mention is one of these
domains. This list is maintained because we had not completely sorted-out
all different possibilities (we resolved easiest 95%), and would like to be
fair to original registrant. If we found that some of this domains should be
awarded year (not really likely, but we have to check), they will be
returned to original owner, and if not, name will be deleted. Look for this
name to be resolved (deleted or contact info returned to original) somewhere
before Jan 10th.
