A CNO (.com/.net/.org) name takes about 200 ms for a opensrs lookup (half of it is spent waiting for the registry to answer). That's querying from the same LAN where ping times are under 1ms. Other registries may take a bit more time, but generally OpenSRS overhead for a lookup is around 100ms.
So if it's slow for you, there is a ton of possible reasons: the network latency (especially if there is packet loss, it may take some retransmissions), slow CGIs, etc. If you use a stock opensrs client, also check that option in the config file (OpenSRS.conf) which enables lookups for multiple TLDs, even if you are looking up a single name, so if you aren't using this functionality, disable that option.
