Patrick, The request isn't submitted to the registry until you approve the OpenSRS message. The date the request is presented to the losing registrar by the registry is what matters. I'm not sure what time you approved the transfer at OpenSRS, however it was sometime on the 9th, not the 8th that the registry received it. I see verisign's reply came a couple hours after the domain had expired on the 10th.
Also, this goes back to an earlier discussion, I believe verisign registry expiration dates are at 12:00am EST, if this is correct, the domain expired several hours before you received the OpenSRS confirmation message.
