This could very well be a timing problem with the registry.  I suggest you
either try again, check to ensure it isn't locked (there's a bug that
prevents you from undoing a lock at the moment, fix going in on wednesday)

Email me the domain offlist and I'll see what I can't figure out.

Ouch!  Just registered xxxx.us and tried to update the nameservers:

Registry error, domain's nameservers not updated [SRS Major Code: 5010]

The new nameservers are registered in .US (I checked) and the domain isn't
locked.

Is this a timing issue with the registry or...
