I've never had a problem doing the occasional lookup at whois.crsnic.net (command line). It gives exactly what I need:
$ whois -h whois.crsnic.net dns1.tucows.com Whois Server Version 1.3 Domain names in the .com, .net, and .org domains can now be registered with many different competing registrars. Go to http://www.internic.net for detailed information. Server Name: DNS1.TUCOWS.COM IP Address: 216.40.37.11 Registrar: TUCOWS, INC.
