What you haven't done a good job of is understanding that one of the
reasons why your early adopter RSPs joined OpenSRS's program was because
they DIDN'T offer services like this, and were a pure registration
provider offering only wholesale services.

What you do by taking this action is lower the value of the resellers
(who are most likely your largest source of business) who ALREADY
differentiate themselves by offering these services in house. You say
it makes sense for them to let you take over that service as a
justification for them losing some of the key things that have
differentiated them from the numerous unqualified clueless resellers who
wouldn't know what a CNAME record was if their lives depended on it.

What amazes me is that a Verisign subsidiary seems to understand this
better than Tucows, and has completely resisted encroaching on their
resellers business like Tucows is now doing to theirs.

Tucows has changed its focus to one that is more directed at pandering
to the lowest level of reseller, who beg for features like this because
they know they are incapable of undertaking it themselves. So now
Tucows will provide it for them, and further erode the differentiation
that the best and most innovative resellers have built for themselves.

Anyone remember way back near the beginning when Tucows gave assurances
that implied they would never do this? I read them carefully recently
and notice now that they NEVER explicitly said they wouldn't, but
certainly gave that impression. What they did was wait until the number
of resellers at the lower end of the competency level grew to a level
where they wouldn't be hurt by pissing off their competent resellers,
and are willing to shaft them now.

I saw the writing on the wall when the email service was announced, and
we've been planning for when this day would come. I also stopped
recommending Tucows as a wholesale registration provider to other ISP
operators.

It's a matter of principle.
