To stay focused on computer issues, I am thinking of a plug computer w/SD card + zonemonitor + wireless N camera. This would be triggered by motion. The plug computer could go anywhere. The wireless camera goes in the bedroom, and configure it not to record from 7 pm to 9am. Make it easy for us to cover the lens with a piece of cloth. Looks like ~$250 for 1 plug computer + 1 camera, then $70-100 for each camera afterwards.
We do have a prime suspect: a friend of the daughter of a dog walker. We will always be at risk to that. I think I will download and install zonemonitor, see if I can configure it to behave this way on my real linux box which is an energy hog. If I can demo it working with a cheap camera with this sort of configuration, I could protect my basement computers (with the easy to cart away mac mini). From there, I will see if such an approach brings any peace of mind to my wife.
