There is another, somewhat independent issue that has occurred to me.

What about how the components are split up?
As far as I know this doesn't have any major positive effects: Most of the components share their sources, so you won't spare much disk space.
But we should involve developers already at the beginning: Discussing such topics without knowledge about the benefits and necessary resources could mean to spend too much time that could be used differently.
