Larry Lessig and I have been talking about how awesome it would be if
we could get some of the issues and projects that FC is involved in
discussed at the iCommons Summit in Dubrovnik this year. We think
that Free Culture chapters like your own could be really instrumental
in encouraging debate and the growth of the commons in other
countries and we're keen to support what you're doing. Where I come
from (South Africa) we're wanting to initiate a discussion about a
Cape Town Free Culture chapter when Larry and Jimmy Wales come out
here for a bunch of celebrations in April (more on that to follow!)
So, if you had to give the 2/3 most important/lively discussions/
debates that you've had over the past year; and 3 of the most
interesting projects that have been initiated by FC, what would they be?
I'd say that, in terms of iCommons debates, my top 3 would probably be:
1. The debate about what piracy actually means in the global sense
and whether it is an issue that those working on licensing (CC, for
e.g.) needs to at least engage with.
2. The debate around what you need to fulfill in order to say that
you deliver 'open content' (based on the huge numbers of projects
that say they're open education, for example, and make you pay a
membership fee in order to view content - this really happens!) and
whether there needs to be system of identifying those materials that
fit a particular view of what being open means
3. The debate about what kind of role licencing plays in developing a
free culture and whether there are any additional features that need
to be in place in order to ensure a free culture in different societies
So, what would you say?
Looking forward to hearing from you!
Best,
Heather.
