It does sound like RIAA's being anal about plugging the analogue hole. After all they are the recording industry and it's not surprising they'll preciously guard their control over all recording and all channels, even if that means their monopoly gives us mono.
No doubt this isn't as bad as it seems, but is simply RIAA requesting a precautionary measure until such time as TPMs can be enabled via analogue channels, thus permitting people to make a limited number of brief recordings for 'fair use' (what an oxymoron) purposes.
