That's true - to add in your div dynamically, you can do:

$('<div id="throbber"><img src="" alt=""></div>')
        .hide()
        .ajaxStart(function(){
            $(this).show();
        })
        .ajaxStop(function(){
            $(this).hide();
         })
         .appendTo("#someContainer");

That way it's "more semantic" - or "less non-semantic", however you
wanna look at it.
