I'm a PHP programmer and I had used Prototype + Sc. extensively before. One thing I like about JQuery is that I can use it for my daily coding pretty easy, while concentrating on PHP part. When I want to trigger a button to slide down a menu all I need is JQ, if more fancy action needed I use other plugins (will need time to search and try). So simply JQuery at its current state saves me much time, with just a 20k. Regarding the size reduction, I wouldn't loose any of Ajax+FX as I am using them both daily, but go for some stricly JS side helper functions that most of the non-JS programmers won't use.
