I've found it quite practical to host biggish data on an OSF repository, which 
has it's own version control, and then use it in a local R session with the 
https://github.com/CenterForOpenScience/osfr pkg. The OSF repo also hooks into 
the github repo with the R code, so data and code can all be archived in the 
one OSF repo.
