Hi David,

Sorry it's taken a while to circle back to this but it's great to hear your
enthusiastic thoughts on it. Quick update here:

I've got a small team together interested in tackling the Japanese
translations. They're mainly interested in R so I think we would start with the
R gapminder lesson and take it from there. I've been thinking more about how to
do this collaboratively, the easiest way to get up and running would be to
share the raw PO files on GitHub I think (and send each other Pull Requests).
There might be a cleverer way to go about it but since most of us are
comfortable with Git/GitHub we could start with that.

I've also heard from the Korean team that they've already got a translation for
several lessons in Korea. They're also interested in switching over to this
system.

Are we able to write up a more detailed README on how to get it set up? Of
course the process will be different for the first time with a new language or
contributing to an existing (ongoing) translation. I'll try to put together a
quick guide based on my experiences with it to get the Japanese team started
but if you have any guide or README in progress (especially for others in
interested in starting with other languages) that would be great.

I think we still have to discuss how to keep lessons updated once the Japanese
(or Korea) lessons are translated. If this system can handle that, it would be
great. Ideally, Software Carpentry itself could make some changes to make this
easier on us. I expect that changes to the material will continue to be done
mainly in English (although I think we should still welcome PRs and comments in
other languages to discuss whether to make such changes on the main English
lessons). Would it be feasible to have SWC lessons to "releases" or some kind
of checkpointing with a changelog of main points to update? We can see change
with GitHub of course but it would help translation teams to prioritise what
changes need to be made.

Thanks,

Tom Kelly
