Java has two flavors: The Java SE – widely advertised on Oracle website. https://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/overview/index.html
The OpenJDK -- https://openjdk.java.net/ I am not very familiar with Java either so I hope someone would be willing to elaborate on these. I believe, Java SE (Standard Edition and all its friends (Java EE [Enterprise Edition]) and so on are the ones that would require some licensing fee in the future versions. OpenJDK does not. That is the “open source” Java. The difference is: OpenJDK consists only of open source or (re)distributable materials as far as I know. The good thing is that there are binary builds for every platforms we care about (Linux, Win, Mac) so it should not be a problem as far as OpenRefine, going forward. Thanks, Colin. I’m not terribly familiar with the ins and outs of Java. Can you tell me more about how one would replace one’s Java install with an open source version? The open source version of Java will keep going, use that instead! Colin. OpenRefine is a critical application for Data and Library Carpentries, and I am concerned that Oracle’s new license model is going to discourage use on any computer that might be called “commercial.” I haven’t encountered any discussion of this topic on the list to date. Does anyone have any insight?
