Hi there!

There are several of us in Michigan, there are just very rarely events around
here. We used to have a fairly active community at Michigan State, but a lot of
the bioinformatics-focused PIs left the university, and so there’s not really
anyone left to host. There was also a reasonably active group at U of M, but I
think a lot of the grad students that were driving it have moved on. I tried
for a while to keep organizing events at MSU after the PIs left, but had little
success, and I since I’ve graduated I’m not officially associated with them
anymore anyway. I typically go teach out of state now. But, I’m always up for
local events! I work remotely, and have a flexible schedule, so I can teach
almost any time.

One final thing, we set up a very low traffic…and possibly defunct Michigan
mailing list several years ago:
[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>

It might be worth sending a mail there and seeing who’s left around here :)

Good afternoon!

Since starting a new position in Michigan about 6 months ago, I've been keeping
my eye out for any Carpentries activity in the area without much success. To my
knowledge, I am the only instructor at my university, but based on the website
map it looks like there might be a few others in the area. I would love to
start a community of instructors that will help each other run workshops (full
or modified) every once in awhile. Let me know if you are interested!

In addition, I would love suggestions about building up a program at a (for
lack of better wording) "Carpentries-naive" campus. Did you get started with
single modules or did you jump straight into a full 2-day event? Ff you started
with modified workshops, when did you feel comfortable transitioning into a 2
day workshop? And from where did you recruit your non-certified helpers and
instructors?

Thanks!

Daria
