Hi, and welcome to illumos.
So illumos is core kernel source. There are several companies that use
illumos kernel, including nexenta to build a product. There are also a
few communities that use that source to add a userland and create a
distribution. Openindiana is probably the biggest distribution based on
illumos. Smartos is also a distribution based on illumos.
Nexenta has had a distro based earlier on opensolaris source with a
debian userland, it was called nexenta core platform. Stormos is going
to continue building a illumos based debian userland distro. We, Nexenta
have a new distro that will be built from illumos with debian packaging,
but the same upstream source for user as openindiana. We are in our
final phases of completing the distro and are hoping to have it out by
the end of the month. The new distro will be called illumian (illumos +
debian).
Illumos as a community is only a little over a year old and there is
alot of room for growth. It is a true open source open development
community. And we welcome you participation!

continues talking
about the Illumos dist... Which doesn't seem to be a dist, but part of
a dist that will
be a dist... Well, you can see my confusion here... :)
