Regarding the name, I never for a second thought picking OpenIndiana would cause us so much grief. It was picked on purely logical grounds. When Sun decided to create a usable distribution out of the OpenSolaris source code, the project for it was Indiana. Since we're the continuation of that project, but in the community, and since Solaris is trademarked, OpenIndiana just made perfect sense to me.
In Europe we have products and companies named after far more insane things, like the Egg credit card, the Smile bank. Nobody bats an eyelid. Linux has far stupider sounding names. "CentOS", "Gentoo" and "Ubuntu" all sound ridiculous to me, but I think nothing of it. The people who originally seemed to revile most against OpenIndiana were the IPS haters, the people burned within Sun by the project, so I just shrugged it off. But if people do genuinely dislike it, if it does threaten the success of the project, then I would happily consider taking the proposition of a name change to our core developers. But we'd need to know for sure that it's an issue, because changing it involves a significant amount of work. Regarding the embarrassing state of the website, unfortunately nobody with any web design talents has stepped forward to assist with it. When the project began one individual did come forward, but he insisted on using a less common CMS (liferay) and he got bored before we could reach consensus on how to move forward. Since then, nobody else has volunteered. If I had more money I would pay because I can't bare to look at the website, it pains me so much. I don't dare say a text based one like Debian's would be better. But right now my priority is the distribution itself. ------------------------------------------- illumos-discuss Archives: https://www.listbox.com/member/archive/182180/=now RSS Feed: https://www.listbox.com/member/archive/rss/182180/21175430-2e6923be Modify Your Subscription: https://www.listbox.com/member/?member_id=21175430&id_secret=21175430-6a77cda4 Powered by Listbox: http://www.listbox.com
