Hi All, Thank you all for letting me air my protests, I'm sorry if I have been overly angry on this whole issue. I care greatly about not just the success of OI, but as Illumos and all its distributions as a whole. When we make decisions I want them to be the right ones, not short sighted or selfish ones.
I do disagree with the decision to create a new community distribution (I know some of you think it isn't new because it replaces NCP, but really, it is a new distro - something with a new name and different contents is "new"), for the reasons I've stated previously. But I have spoken with Igor on IRC (who for those who don't recognise the name, seems to be doing most of the work of building Illumian) and he really wants us to collaborate on this, including having the Illumian build servers spit out IPS packages too. So the spirit of collaboration seems to be alive to the benefit both projects. So, what I'm trying to say is, that if we really do work together on this then I can see us all benefiting overall. And hey, competition can sometimes be a good motivator. Ultimately we all want Illumos (which is effectively the important bit) to thrive, and we'll both be working on the same end result - just different packages. But I still do feel let down that none of the established commercial players have directly contributed to OI since its launch. We have faced a very hard uphill battle from the very beginning, and it is quite frankly a miracle that OI exists at all. We have all worked very hard on it, and please remember, we are unpaid! Most of those that contribute to Illumos are paid to do so. If OI had paid developers I imagine things would be very different indeed. I am also sad when people like Garrett complain about our lack of progress, complain about the name, it's always complaints, never praise. As a project, our devs and myself feel completely unappreciated by the Illumos team. People like e^pi from Joyent calling pkg "shit" on #illumos endlessly, all the bickering, it just tires us all out. Some contributions from those who benefit indirectly from OpenIndiana would really lift our spirits, as would some appreciation for our efforts and a pat on the back. I hope that's not too much to ask for. It has the benefit of costing very little, too.
