Distributions have their own mailing lists, wikis, and forums which can appeal to new users. Illumos is primarily a kernel and core libraries, which ideally will only attract attention from people with considerable technical aptitude and more interest in gettings accomplished than with chatter.

What is then required is a very good search function, I'd not consider
this is one of Mailmans' strenghts ;-)

Google and other search engines suffice where Mailman falls short.
