Yes, of course. However, the most important challenge for Illumos right now is to achieve the confidence of existing Solaris and OpenSolaris users. If Illumos (and its derivatives) does not accomplish that, then the long-term innovation which resulted in OpenSolaris will die, and OpenSolaris users, or disgruntled Oracle Solaris users will move to something like Linux or FreeBSD rather than an Illumos-based distribution. The near-term success of Illumos depends more on achieving parity in development and support structure (e.g. with what Sun used to provide, and what Linux and *BSD provide) and less on striking new inventions and technologies.

If the old-hands successfully depend on Illumos then the newbies will surely follow.
