There are other ways to contribute to open source. From doc writing, to various testing, or just keeping track of the bugs in the bug tracker to make sure nothing slips through the cracks. Another way to contribute is to pick which distro you like the best, and help out by updating packages. > But I would be willing to install a distribution of illumos and use it > frequently as a desktop OS, and can provide bug reports as I come across > them. > > As a Desktop user, it seems my first choice ought to be OpenIndiana, which > is intended as a desktop. Yep. I use OI on my laptop and my workstation at work. > If I find bugs there, would I report them to that project, or to the > illumos project? sort answer: yes long answer: it depends. If you know that the bug is with illumos-gate itself, you can file a bug with the illumos project. If it is with something outside of illumos-gate, OI project is the place. Keep in mind that illumos and OI share a bug tracker (https://www.illumos.org/issues). > Also, my impression from reading over the project briefly, since I support > open source software, is that it should be a high priority to replace the > blobs that come from Solaris. All the show-stoppers have been addressed a long time ago. There is still a bunch of closed binaries that illumos uses and they should all be replaced, but it's not a very glorious line of work. My suggestion is, since you've expressed interest in Illumos-based desktop (and there aren't many people that care about that), to help your favorite distro. By updating packages, by making new packages, by testing, whatever you find enjoyable.
