David,

From my personal email archives, from both the ARM and MIPS
Solaris ports, CZFS
(Compressed ZFS) was mentioned for use for lower end/embedded systems.

Are there currently acttive projects for ARM or MIPS support?

Is anyone really interested in this to the extent of doing the
work or paying someone qualified to do it?

It might be "cool" to have OpenSolaris descendants on routers
or smartphones...

It's not only about mobiles, but with ARM64 there will be more and
more servers with this architecture (AMD currently goes ARM), so
it might be a valuable niche to have a full server stack there
which could be commercially successful since there are not many
competitors (seriously, only Linux ARM).
Of course, a mobile spinoff from this (with Gnome 3?) would be
easy to implement then, if there were not these closed-hardware chips
(namely, Broadcom SOCs), which will prevent none-commercial entities
to develop drivers (see Raspberry Pi, which, unfortunately, has such
a closed SOC).

There's an interesting move at Broadcom, the former closed source
VideoCore IV driver for the Raspberry Pi processor (and others)
has been released as open source, opening the opportunity to
fully port illumos to Broadcom-based mobiles:
