Depends how far back you want to go.

Prior to about Solaris 2.6 or 7, SunOS/Solaris didn't include much
third-party software at all.
(But many of us simply installed what we wanted into /usr/local and all was
well.) Eventually
customer demand drove the inclusion of increasing amounts of third-party
applications.

The biggest one, I guess, was when OpenWindows and CDE were deprecated and
replaced by
GNOME as the default desktop environment.
