I don't think this is accurate, at least not nowadays. In pkgsrc we're
currently successfully building around 26,000 FOSS programs on illumos:

While it's true that over the years I've had to patch many hundreds of
programs to make them work on first Solaris and now illumos, and there
are still a fair few that do not currently build but could with patches,
it's not "most".
Looking through the archives, when I was building pkgsrc on Solaris 8 on
SPARC, we were below 50% success rate (1,810 successful packages out of
4,500 total packages), so it may have been true back then, but from
memory there were certainly a fair few issues that were related to
running on SPARC compared to x86, rather than due to the userland.
It's certainly still frustrating when you come across software that is
non-portable, especially when it is for spurious reasons, but in my
experience things are better now than they ever have been, and my ever
increasing package count would appear to back that up.
