The other thing that my prototyping teacher, Chauncey, taught us is to do a lot of side projects, even volunteer work, so that you can build up your project portfolio. Get involved with the Usability Professionals Association, Human Factors Ergonomic Society, and other like societies so that you can make contacts, attend conferences, etc.
