I gotta say that the stereo type is unfair. I work at a large online company that folks like to poke fun of - in the same way you just referenced microsoft. Yeah - the executive missions and decisions are often a joke, but there are great people, highly skilled, that give a damn. I know a few first rate folks at microsoft are trying really hard. The corporate face never reflects the details.
