Actually, I don't think breadcrumbs or "home" links are cost free. The quotation from Cooper in Will's signature makes the argument for me. All else being equal, fewer links is better. And "home" links frequently occupy the most prominent location in the navigation -- the left-most spot. That's not to say the cost isn't outweighed by the benefit in this case. Just that there's a weighting to be done.
