I go nuts with my organization on my desktop, which is odd goes my
non-virtual organization is, to be honest, very lacking.

I am a firm believer in two things, a clean desktop and an
intelligent file structure. I try to keep my desktop limited to a
dozen icons, which include commonly used programs and folders
containing stuff I am currently working on.

Many of my file structures are either broken down initially by date
if it is something that occurs over the course of several years. This
helps me keep track of what I did and when I did it. If it is a
"project" folder the sub-folders are broken down by the phases of
the project and drafts vs final versions of any documents I create.

A key example of this is where I store all my music. The main folder
is simply called Music, inside it is broken down by artist. In each
artist folder it is broken down by album. This is a pretty simple
example but it shows the overall concept my my structure for just
about anything.

It took some time to develop the system, but the amount of time it
saves me was well worth it.
