Interesting research, though I'm not entirely sure the results are due to the distance per se or whether this is an apples and apples comparison.
The culture and organisation of a project team make a big difference to their success, co-located or not. It also ignores the fact that some projects wouldn't happen at all if it wasn't for being able to work collaboratively at a distance.
