This one talks about how the Office 2007 team decided when to use icons or not: http://blogs.msdn.com/jensenh/archive/2006/03/06/544499.aspx This one talks about the importance of labels: http://blogs.msdn.com/jensenh/archive/2005/11/01/487661.aspx The short answer is to use both. :) My own personal take is that well-designed icons can enrich both the usability and desirability of an interface, with the caveat that you should usually provide a complementary text label. Just my opinion, FWIW.
