The short answer is to use both. :)

My own personal take is that well-designed icons can enrich both the
usability and desirability of an interface, with the caveat that you should
usually provide a complementary text label.  Just my opinion, FWIW.  What
Josh Porter just wrote provides some good rationale for this approach...
