As an American in New Zealand and former member of AIGA I have my own
perspective on this.

There are a lot of parallels between the two orgs, but I think IxD
tries to separate itself from "graphic design"/"look and feel"
per se. Our aim is the interaction, not the exact look of that
interaction.

That being said, IxDA has the potential to be a world organization, I
just look at the member posts for proof of this. The best thing about
AIGA is the standards it fights for and the visibility and
credibility it affords its members. IxDA can do this as well by
clearly defining its role to other organizations and specialties, in
these ways:

1. How does IxD integrate with different software processes (a la
Cooper and Goal Directed Design Process with Agile)?
2. How do IxDers work in non-software envrionments?
3. How to best get the message out there for what IxD is? There are
many conflicting views on the internet (as there are for aiga/design
that degrade an outsider's understanding of our process)

Addressing these things would go a long way to increase IxDA's cred.
Cooperating with AIGA is as important as with groups of developers. Do
we have partnerships with Agile groups, for example?
