Having watched the video, it looks really amazing. But, is there
some reason for the large amount of whitespace? It seems like it
would be more beneficial to give more room to the actual feed
content. Perhaps the display was optimized just for the video?

It's a scaling thing I think. At present, the two left panels grow vertically based on how many groups and how many feeds you add to both lists. Shaun's demo shows a small list, but if you're OCD like I am, then both the left panels will fill up quite a bit of the white space you see in the video.

Further, the panel system Shaun uses for this type of list scaling is the perfect model from moving a web app like this from browser to mobile. We've seen the old tri-pane model of email entrenched for quite some time, but I think the panel systems the work horizontally like they do in Fever scales far more so when moving to the "card" mentality of mobile devices.

The temperature metaphor was really nice, I thought, and the whole idea
and execution on combining "sparks" and "kindling" to get the
fire was simply exceptional.

I agree. And the it permeates the whole product while also being part of his marketing driven brain. Feed a fever, Red hot, well read... etc.

It's a great example of how to use a product metaphor for more than just the product itself.
