User control is essential, the ability to pause a carousel is important because it has the potential to interfere with the users focus on other page elements.
Timers that indicate that the carousel is about to step enable the user to time their interactions correctly. For example, if the user knows that there are four seconds left until the next step, he or she has a chance to scan another page element.
