Yes, I *did* just go through the pain of reformatting this, since I'm
dealing with TBird, and it's not honoring your choice of quoting style.

I also have to say that I truly appreciate the answers I've received,
off list and on, and that it's been extremely helpful. I will now
attempt to make myself more clear (yeah, I know, good luck).

Ah, I can see that I made a tactical error in my description. I've
implied that the volume would remain high (it won't). I'm pretty excited
to see that there are others using this, since I really like the
lightweight footprint. I'm not looking for other choices for a client,
but was hoping against hope for another FreeBSD user of Sylpheed/Claws.
On the other hand, I'm just happy to see that there are users of Claws
(my guess is you are using Debian/Ubuntu).

Here's the really funny part. That's more than 20 separate gmail
accounts. In addition, there's 335 mb in TBird. The whole thing totals a
gig. Most things aren't worth saving. I'm amazed that I have 1GB that
*is* worth saving. I already have email from 1990 through 2004 on a
Ubuntu/Claws install, which is what made me realize that I could
simplify my life further (and reduce the annoyance factor of using a web
browser to read email, too).

Actually, the two accounts I'd already popped have been a cakewalk.
Google stuff works, I just want much less of it.

I was looking for people who had used Claws or Sylpheed/Claws to manage
large volumes of mail. I am enormously grateful to find experiences, at
least on the Linux side. I will get rid of almost all the gmail
accounts, but plan to continue to pop, long term, for four of them. You
just can't beat the spam filtering.

You guys are the best.
