SNIP This looks almost exactly like the situation at UCSD, if you substitute "department" for "campus". IIRC there was a global "network ID" (username), which was used for shared services. Departments could use the NetId authentication system or their own, for their own services, but everyone had to use the central NetID for accessing shared services.
