A few comments: I'm glad to have feedback about this since people have questions or comments about it.
One thing I want to make very clear: there's nothing here that is intended to be a wedge with USENIX. I think we're actually in good shape on improving our (LOPSA) relationship with USENIX and I want that to continue! I say that as a LOPSA Board member, as a member of the organizing committee of the USENIX LISA '11 conference, but also on a personal level. So, seriously, this is not intended as an affront to USENIX. The main point of the email list is to try and create a venue where people that don't live on IRC or Twitter can communicate with other folks at LISA and feel comfortable doing so to a specific audience. Some people think the separate list is a terrible idea and that the amount of traffic on it doesn't merit a separate list. That could end up being true. But because we're going to try to promote its use, I thought it would be best to make it an opt-in thing. One issue at question here is whether it is better to have more eyes seeing the content in this case or to preserve the opt-in approach. My call was that opt-in was more important and that the more targeted audience actually provides value in terms of what people might post to the list (e.g. "Beers. Hotel bar. Now."). The plan actually *is* to have e.g. a new list for PICC attendees to communicate with each other. However, we'll see how the LISA list works out. If it's a stinker, we'll forget about the separate email list idea for future events and will look for other ways to try and improve communication among sysadmin event attendees. I think Adam's suggesting of consolidating our mailing lists is a good one and we should look into it, maybe do a little web poll to see how folks feel about it. I'm certainly not opposed to changing the setup of the email list or IRC channel and so forth. As they are, though, I don't really see them as being critically flawed so I'm inclined to stay the course for now and see how well they work at LISA next week. They're opt-in, so if you want to use them, that's great and I hope they provide something useful for you. If they don't get much traffic or end up being bad in some other way, then we'll take the experience and input from this event and carry it forward to the next sysadmin event where we think we can add value in trying to connect sysadmins with each other. We will indeed be tweeting and I assume the IRC discussions at LISA will be lively as well. Anyone have more suggestions or recommendations for how LOPSA can improve communication among attendees at LISA or other events?
